Quick Returner Set To Strike Again Under Ideal Conditions
Seven Furlong Specialist Set To Regain Winning Ways
At just 5%, the Lee Carter trained MAAZEL hasn’t got an encouraging strike-rate but he goes in the seven furlong handicap at Kempton this afternoon with every chance of increasing his tally. His quick reappearance after running second at Lingfield last weekend shows intent and his last win, at that course in March, came after running the previous day. To his advantage is the form of his Epsom stable which is showing two winners and six placed horses from its last eight runners, the win rate being 149% better than expected. Prior to his latest run the gelding was second to Violet’s Lads over course and distance after a near five months break from racing and goes off the same mark of 55 today. Consistent types Cauthen and Silverturnstogold were just in front of him that day and he looks ripe to get his head in front this afternoon.ELUSIF is next best on BTO ratings. He hasn’t actually been running that well, only beating a total of four home from 22 runners in his last two efforts. He did complete a hat-trick last Spring, however, wearing cheek-pieces in two of them and has that help fitted again today for the first time in nine runs. He has also dropped to a mark of 50, a rating off which he has won before. There is some money for RAJMAN, another who has been running poorly but is on a winnIng mark. HOLLANDER would be a real contender if this was over six furlongs, a distance over which he beat DROP KICK MURPHI on his penultimate outing. The two are weighted to dead-heat today but Hollander has only seen the backs of 43 horses in five attempts at the trip and his rival looks likely to better him in this event. At 15/8 and being backed it looks like Maazel’s day. G Lees
