Fellowes plots familiar path for King Carney

Listed winner may follow stablemate’s Newbury route.

Charlie Fellowes is already plotting a familiar path for his Listed winner King Carney on his return to action next season.

The Newmarket trainer has earmarked the same mile-and-a-quarter conditions contest he claimed at Newbury in April with stablemate King Ottokar as a potential starting point for the son of Australia.

After getting off the mark at the third attempt at Nottingham, the Paul Roy-owned colt took a step up in class in his stride when running out the winner of the Silver Tankard Stakes at Pontefract this month.

Fellowes said: “King Carney is a nice horse that is progressing all the time. He is very straightforward and won nicely at Pontefract the other day.

“Next season is a long way off – (but) after winning a Listed race like that, you could look at a Derby trial.

“I may just start him off in the mile-and-a-quarter conditions race I won with King Ottokar this year.”

Fellowes is confident King Carney can develop into a Group race performer.

He added: “He should make into a nice horse next season. It is a big step up again from Listed level to Group race class, but he looks more than up to it.

“He is by Australia, and they tend to get better and stay further with age, so he will benefit again with another winter on his back.”

Although both of King Carney’s victories have come with soft in the going description, Fellowes believes he can prove equally effective on a quicker surface.

He said: “He has had no problem with soft going and he clearly handles that type of surface well, but I don’t think it is essential to him.”
