Moon eclipses Cologne rivals

Trainer Henk Grewe enjoys big-race double.

Trainer Henk Grewe has set his sights on the German Derby with Wonderful Moon after he made a successful reappearance at Cologne on Friday.

The son of Sea The Moon won a Krefeld Group Three by 12 lengths on his final start last term and was a hot favourite to pick up where he left off in the pferdewetten.de – Cologne Classic.

Partnered by Andrasch Starke, Wonderful Moon travelled well throughout the extended 10-furlong heat before easing to the front to claim another Group Three verdict by a length and three-quarters.

Grewe told www.galopponline.de: “I was pretty sure of victory, but sure, if you have the favourite in the Group race, you’re already tense.

“This is just something very special and if Andrasch lets go of him earlier, then he wins even easier, I rate him a little stronger. I really liked the way he won.”

Grewe and Starke also combined for victory in the other feature event, the Carl-Jespers Preis, with Be My Sheriff.

The six-year-old had finished second in the Group Two contest last term, but he made amends in style, winning by two lengths under a confident ride.

Cologne was staging the second day of action following the resumption of German racing, with Hanover having held the opening card on Thursday.
