New date for Kentucky Derby

The Kentucky Derby will be held in September rather than May, according to unconfirmed reports.

For 75 years the USA’s most famous horse race has been held on the first Saturday in May, but concerns over the coronavirus pandemic will see organisers postpone the showpiece.

The Derby – due to take place on May 2 – will instead be run on September 5 this year, according to the Louisville Courier-Journal, who cited unidentified sources close to the Churchill Downs race, with a formal announcement expected imminently.
