Saudi Cup winner Maximum Security to join Bob Baffert
Former trainer Servis under investigation over alleged doping offences.
Bob Baffert is set to train top American horse Maximum Security after his previous handler, Jason Servis, was indicted on Monday as part of an investigation into alleged doping. The four-year-old bagged a huge prize at the end of February when winning the $20 million Saudi Cup for joint-owners Gary and Mary West and the Coolmore triumvirate of John Magnier, Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith. However, West has announced he will remove all of his horses under Servis’ care, following news the trainer was one of 27 individuals indicted by the District Attorney for the Southern District of New York in Manhattan. A statement issued by West to the Thoroughbred Daily News said: “Yesterday, Jason Servis, a trainer we have used for five years was indicted on multiple charges regarding using an illegal substance in horses. “This news is extremely disturbing and disappointing. “Therefore we will be moving all our horses from Jason Servis as soon as arrangements can be made with other trainers. Maximum Security will be sent to Bob Baffert.”Jorge Navarro, who trained 2019 Dubai Golden Shaheen winner XY Jet, is also among those who face charges relating to the alleged use of performance-enhancing substances.
