Johnson to return to the saddle
Jockey Richard Johnson will return to the saddle on Thursday after recovering from a broken arm.
Johnson has two rides booked for Thursday afternoon, one for Olly Murphy at Musselburgh before he then plans to travel to Ludlow for boss Philip Hobbs. The four-time champion jockey suffered the injury at Exeter just over a month ago, and his return is timely, with the Cheltenham Festival two weeks ago. He will now be able to reignite the title battle between himself and rival jockey Brian Hughes. Hughes has not been able to create a huge gap due to the recent weather, with just 19 wins separating the pair. In an interview last month with the Racing Post, Johnson confirmed he could reel in Hughes, and he says the doctors are happy for him to return to action. He said: ‘I’ve just spoken to Jerry Hill, the BHA doctor, and he’s happy for me to return to riding on Thursday. It looks like the plan will be for me to be at Ludlow or Musselburgh as things stand and it will be good to be back. ‘The specialist was happy with the x-ray, which was an important step in the right direction, and I schooled at Yogi Breisner’s on Monday morning for Warren Greatrex, and everything felt fine.’
