Have a play on the sand at Southwell
Outsider Of The Field Can Defy His Odds For Local Trainer
A recent runner in a field of eight catches the eye as a possible each-way steal and Robyn Brisland runs one at Southwell this evening that fits that criteria and goes at massive odds. The two-year-old PURPLE SANDPIPER contests the Visit attheraces. com Median Auction Maiden Stakes over a mile and has two runs to his name that at a glance hardly suggest success. He was last of 10 at Kempton on his debut, going off at 33/1 and running as green as grass. He then went to Nottingham and repeated the placing but ran much better, actually going as well as anything in the race two furlongs out on the heavy ground after breaking well but then losing his place. He was not punished in the last furlong and was allowed to coast home in the final hundred yards by jockey Paul Mulrennan. His sire, Mayson has had 19 winners from 88 runners at Southwell in the last five years and the course is very much one that, in a racing context, horses love or hate. Brisland moved to his Newark stables from Newmarket less than a year ago and is only a few miles from Southwell where he has had success; his runner there have produced a winning stat of nine from 52, a figure 83% better than expected. He has sent three horses to the course in the last fortnight and they have run 1st, 8th and 2nd, the latter beaten in a photo finish. Add that jockey Kieran O’Neill is going at a near 25% win rate when riding for the trainer at Southwell and things look better. CREATIVITY is a worthy favourite, also being by Mayson and having two placed efforts at the course. She has a major chance on these terms, claiming a 5lb female allowance. The same applies to Finery who shaped well with a second on her Newcastle debut, but at 66/1 with Paddy Power Purple Sandpiper can be worth a little each-way punt; he is just better than evens to gat a first four placing with Betfair.
