Legal Eyes smiling at Plumpton
Pauling gelding comes good
Legal Eyes enjoyed a slice of good luck when gaining compensation for a number of near misses in the “A Sprit Of Love” Memorial Race Chase at Plumpton. Having placed in four of six previous starts, the six-year-old made his chasing debut a triumphant one when taking advantage of the final-fence fall of My Way before seeing off Full Bore by five lengths. Pauling said of the 12-1 winner: “It was a very pleasing performance. He went a nice gallop and a lot of the others struggled to get into it. “It was unfortunate what happened to My Way and it would have been a hell of a ding dong from the back of the last. “I’m really pleased he has won. He can be gassy first time out, so that is why we went back in trip, but the extended two-miles-three round Plumpton would have been tight enough.” He added: “Some of the owners live close to the track, so it was nice for them.“We will look for something in three weeks to a month, but the main thing was to get his head in front, as it has been long overdue.” A switch to Plan B worked wonders for Shambra (6-1) after the Lucy Wadham-trained five-year-old mastered Dan McGrue by a short head in the SIS Supports Bob Champion Cancer Trust Handicap Hurdle. The Newmarket handler said: “She is cracking mare and she does run well fresh. She was meant to go to Goodwood last Sunday for the jump jockeys’ race there. She was well ready today and jumped beautifully. “The owners are so enthusiastic and it is fantastic to have a winner for them, as they have been faithful to this mare.” Uallrightharry tested the nerves of owner Sally Stanier on his seasonal return, surviving a blunder at the last before going on to collect the Summertree Novices’ Handicap Chase by two and a quarter lengths. Stainer said of the Linda Jewell-trained 7-1 winner: “He has not had the best record of jumping since I’ve had him, as he has fallen in two of his three hurdles starts and has made mistakes in each of his chase races. “I just thought he might need the run, but he obviously didn’t and Linda has done a wonderful job. I’d have been happy for him to get round jumping well.” War Lord provided The Wychwood Partnership with their first winner with Colin Tizzard in staying on strongly to take the Geoffrey Budd Partnership Maiden Hurdle by a length. Assistant trainer Joe Tizzard said: “It is the first winner we have had in these silks and some in the group are new supporters of ours, so that has eased the pressure.” On the 11-4 shot, he added: “Harry Cobden gave him a lovely introduction and he got his head in front at the right time. “He handled that ground well and we will stay at two miles in this ground. He is a nice young horse, that will have learnt a lot today.”
